• Strut inserts/struts
  • In mid 1990 Volkswagen did away with the rebuildable strut, so instead of an insert, only a replacement strut could be used. If you have a Jetta or Golf built built after 1990, use kit on A3 page.
  • Before you order the suspension kit, you will want to check the condition of the upper spring seats which are prone to rust and the protective sleeves, which are prone to deterioration.

• Clutch installation
  • For the Volkswagen Jetta and Volkswagen Golf, the clutch cover assembly is bolted to the crankshaft and then the flywheel is bolted to the cover assembly. The flywheel is "timed" to the clutch cover by 2 roll pins. If the cover and flywheel are not oriented to each other during bolt up, one of the roll pins will not line up with a hole or notch in the cover stamping. This results in a deformed clutch cover and the clutch will not release. Prior to tightening the bolts onto the flywheel, check to see if the roll pins are aligned.

  • Engine codes and numbers are stamped on a flat area of the block between #3 and #4 cylinder.

In 1985, Volkswagen made some major changes in their models sold in the United States. The new models of Golf and Jetta were the A2 series. The Rabbit now assumed the same name as in Europe and became known in the US as the Golf. Very few of the Rabbit parts will fit the VW Golf, and very few of the 1980-1984 VW Jetta parts fit the Jetta 2.
From 1985 to 1992, Volkswagen used 4 different engines in their Golfs and Jettas, with 6 different fuel delivery systems. From 1985 to 1987, the basic models were supplied with the "GX" engine using the Bosch continuous injection system, (CIS) and the electronic continuous injection system, (CIS-E).
The basic model Volkswagen Jetta and Golf from 1988 to 1992 used the "RV" engine which included the Digifant engine management system, integrating the fuel delivery system with the ignition system.
A high compression engine (10:1), engine code "HT", using the (CIS-E) system was used in the 1985 Golf GTI and Jetta GLI. In 1986 and 1987, the compression ratio was dropped to 9:1 and the engine code was "RD".
From 1987 to 1992, Volkswagen offered a choice of 2 engines in the Golf GTI and Jetta GLI. The "PL" engine, with a displacement of 1800cc, was one option. It had 16 valves and used the CIS-E injection system. The other option has the "PF" engine, used until 1992. It had 8 valves and it used the Digifant engine management system. In 1990, the CIS-E Motronic system, also complete engine management system, and a 2000cc engine replaced the "PL" option and was coded as "9A".
