Low Battery VW Trouble Codes
Passat won't start

Home -- Links Specials

Vehicles: Golf, Jetta, Passat, engine codes ABA and AAA (1996-1999)
Cabrio, engine code ABA (1996-1999)
EuroVan, engine code AES (1997-2000)

Symptom: Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) P1580 and P0103

DTCs P1580 (throttle actuator B1 malfunction) and P0103 (mass or volume airflow, circuit high input) can become stored in these vehicles' memories if a driver tries to start the vehicle with a dead battery. Volkswagen says this may occur even if the battery is low (below 7 volts).

These codes usually show up together on vehicles with low-charged or dead batteries. When the driver tries to start a car with this condition, a P1580 code will first be set. Then after the vehicle is jump-started, the second DTC will be set in memory.

Volkswagen notes that if these DTC's are erased and the technician does not perform throttle body adaptation, the DTCs will immediately be set in memory again. Also, if throttle body adaptation is performed, but the DTCs are not erased, an "error" message may appear on the technician's scan tool.

In both cases, the vehicle may not start. Moreover, if it does start, it will run poorly.

Advise your customer that the battery condition must first be corrected. Then the DTCs can be erased and throttle body adaptation performed. DTCs will then need to erased once again.

Passat won't start

Vehicle: 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Symptom: Passat won't start unless clutch pedal is depressed extremely hard.

Solution: To fix a stiff clutch pedal, remove the driver's side floor mat and the lower A-pillar trim. Also, remove the carpet protector and pull the driver's side footwell carpet back to expose the sheet metal studs.
Pull the sound deadener away from the carpet and place the deadener against the studs at the floor. Using the two body studs as a reference, mark, remove and discard a 60 X 90 mm piece of sound deadener under the top stud. Re-glue remaining deadener to carpet.
Remove the two body studs, re-install the carpet and loosen the clutch pedal switch bracket. Firmly press the clutch pedal to the floor. Adjust the microswitch bracket until the distance between the shoulder of the switch and the clutch pedal tab is 2-3mm and tighten the bracket
Depress the clutch pedal several times and ensure the adjustment of the switch is maintained and the switch is not broken. Over-adjustment will cause damage to the switch.
